Like clockwork...
http://www.verisign.com/press_releases/pr/page_043470.html
VeriSign announced that the registry fee for .com domain names will increase from $6.42 to $6.86 and that the registry fee for .net domain names will increase, from $3.85 to $4.23.
Why does it cost so much more to provide the .com registry?
Is it based on the frequency the average .com is queried vs. the average .net, .org, etc?
Seems kind of odd that there is no competitive bidding for the .com registry.
Also odd that the costs are going up as database servers are so much more powerful now per dolllar than 5 years ago, bandwidth costs seem the same or lower, etc. etc.

Verisign wants to make more profits. If the problem was the increasing number of .com domains then this would mean that they also get more profits automatically. With the number of .com domains registered, can you imagine how much money does verisign make when they increase the price by 1 cent?
