I'm looking for a way to tell if a client domain is locked PRIOR to transfer - has anybody ever heard of such a beast?

Telling a person their domain transfer is going to fail - BEFORE they do it - seems like a useful idea.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I usually almost always key my orders in, then unlock the domains at about the same time I'm going through the steps on the e-mail confirmation. Keeps me from unlocking a domain and not transferring it because I forgot/got busy/etc.

That being said... you could always query the registry WHOIS servers (dependent on the TLD) and look for the Status fields. The response will also vary based on TLD... and for .com and .net, could be up to 12 hours behind. (Any EPP-based registry, though - like .org or .biz - should update near real-time.)
